At the end of 2024, the candidates for the annual American Nuclear Society election were announced. Since then, Catherine Prat, an ANS member since 2012, launched a successful write-in campaign to be considered for a seat on the Board of Directors. Having received at least 200 signatures from Society members in favor of her nomination, Prat is now a candidate by petition, bringing the total number on the ballot to 18 candidates who have been nominated for the positions of ANS vice president/president-elect, treasurer, and six board positions (four U.S. directors, one non-U.S. director, and one student director). Ballots will be sent via email on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, and must be submitted by 1:00 p.m. (EDT) on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.

With the annual American Nuclear Society election right around the corner, ANS members will be going to the polls to vote for a vice president/president-elect, treasurer, and members-at-large for the board of directors. Five new directors-at-large joined the American Nuclear Society Board of Directors in June, at the end of the 2024 ANS Annual Conference. Last April, the four at-large members were elected from an initial pool of eight candidates; the Young Member, from a pool of two. Get to know a little about the new ANS leadership below.

The American Nuclear Society President’s Special Committee on Certification is continuing to make progress toward launching a nuclear certification program. The program, which was outlined to the ANS Board of Directors in 2023, is being designed to help establish industry standards and bridge workforce gaps in the nuclear sector to address the growing demand for qualified professionals in the nuclear industry.

Spring marks the passing of the torch for American Nuclear Society leadership. During this election cycle, ANS members voted for the newest vice president/president-elect, four members-at-large for the Board of Directors, and one Young Member director for the Board. New professional division leadership was also decided on in the election, which opened on February 20 and closed on April 9. About 22 percent of eligible members voted—a similar turnout to last year.

The ANS Public Policy Committee (PPC) approached the Board of Directors last November seeking approval of revisions to two position statements.

At the ANS Winter Conference and Expo this past November, the ANS Board of Directors approved the creation of two new student sections—for the University of California–Los Angeles (UCLA) in California and the University of Wyoming (UW) in Laramie, Wyo.

The ANS Public Policy Committee (PPC) approached the Board of Directors last November with a proposal to publish a new consolidated position statement (PS #85) along with two revised position statements (PS #30 and PS #77). All three were published online in January.

In 2022, the American Nuclear Society Board of Directors approached the Diversity and Inclusion in ANS (DIA) committee with the task of revising the ANS Code of Ethics (COE), and at the ANS Winter Meeting this past November, the board gave its approval of the revisions.
